23 December 2016 The new mock up and a Merry Christmas

Last Tuesday (20 December 2016) Patty and I went to Mesa/Gilbert to pick up the new transmission and transfer case. We stayed the night to go to the temple on our temple day (Wednesday). Back to the transmission, we ordered it a week ago from Midwest Transmissions in Gilbert, but it was made or remanned in Canada. It is a 47 RE and a transfer case married to it. I took in the old transmission for a core return, that saved a couple hundred $$. I brought it home and finally got George over to help attache it to the engine. It seems we need to change the flex plate, the torque converter had to be removed to attache it to the engine. This of course is temporary, everything will come out later. Finally Farmer, George and I dropped it in the frame. We moved the Cab back, set it in place and then looked it over to see how it fit and what modifications need to be made. Actually it fit fairly well, we will need to modify 2 cross members. It looks great, and the engine isn't even rebuilt yet. It wasn't cheap, but hopefully worth it. It is called a Heavy Hauler, it was built for towing. Anyway below are some pictures. Enjoy!

These two pictures are when we picked it up in Gilbert

We slid the cab back on the frame to get the tranny and engine in.
We used two engine hoists, one for the engine and one for the tranny/transfer case
Tranny is in place and now lowing the engine in.
George checking it out, he is good.
Checking the fit, and making a few modifications
Moved the cab back in place, engine fits, tranny fits, need just a couple of modifications for the transfer case
The 12 valve Cummings, stock (for now)
 Transmission in place, nice fit.
 Just another angle
I thought this was a cool picture of George and Farmer
Next?
Make the modifications, reassemble the torque converter, strip the engine down to the bare block (to rebuild it) and many more things. One step at a time. So until next time, next step: Merry Christmas
PS: we are still working on the garage too. Maybe I'll get some pictures of that.

5 December 2016 Surprise surprise

As some may know Patty and I went on a river cruise in Hungry, Austria and Germany, which hasn't anything to do with this blog except, while I was gone Farmer, Jeremy, George and Jeff (Jeremy's brother, Farmer's best friend for years) worked on the truck. I was surprised when I returned to see the work. What they did was remove the Cummings engine from the Dodge frame along with the tranny. Then they set it in the Ford truck replaced the cab (temporary) to mock it up for placement. This means they set it in and made sure everything fits and that the mounts work. It does! I think though we may have to find a transmission from a 4X4 Dodge so that the tranny and front differential will be compatible. When we find the tranny we will set it in and mock it. When everything fits right we will re-pull the engine and tranny and the cab. Then get it ready for the frame to be powder coated, the springs re-arched ( maybe add a leaf to it so it will be as a 1 ton frame). So I decided to start working on the cab a little bit more. Farmer and Jeremy and I removed the front window, and the dash, it's almost all out now. Anyway here are the pictures Farmer took while they worked.

Engine is in, of course it's coming back out to be rebuilt.

The guys set the cab back on the frame to see if everything fits

Farmer said he was taking all the pictures and he wasn't in any, so he took a selfie.

inside the cab, with most of the dash gone

This is the front of the dash, coming out.
The whole cab needs to be cleaned out and everything removed
so we can paint it and sound proof it.
Looking out the front of the cab with no front window

The window was in really good condition for a truck that is 41 yrs old.
However we will replace it

I like the way it looks, but it will look a whole lot better soon.
Until next time,

17 Oct 2016 The new used engine has been bought.

Actually I found an engine for the pick up about 2 weeks ago,I just haven't had time to post it. What we did was find an engine on Craig's list, it was still in a 1993 Dodge Pick-up. I called and offered to buy the engine and tranny, it is an automatic with overdrive. I didn't need the rest of the pick-up. So he sold the cab, fenders, doors and I got the motor, tranny and frame, driveline, wheels and the pick-up bed. We needed the flat bed trailer to pick it up, but it had a scrapped car on it. Time to scrap the car. Farmer and I hauled it to the scrap dealer and sold it for $40 per ton, that brought in a whopping $60. Anyway we then went to get the motor et al. When we remove the motor and tranny, I will either sell the rest or cut the frame and make a trailer. We'll see. The motor and tranny will be completely rebuilt and fortified, but first we need to mock it up and make sure it fits where we want it.

scrapping the car, I just thought it was interesting.

 Finally the motor we need
 And a few extras
The pick-up on the rack, back in the rear is a 1961 Ford F-100
Custom with a Cummings swap in it. I was amazed it fit.
He uses it to drag race, turns a quarter mile in 12 seconds. Awesome!
Back home in the old spot
This would make a nice trash trailer.

Hopefully we will start on the mock up for the motor, mounts, and tranny
Until next time,

12 August 2016 - engine is out.

This is a quick post, yesterday Farmer and I decided to remove the engine, tranny, drivelines and differential. We need an engine hoist. George has one but he worked last night and is resting. My neighbor has one, so I go over to borrow it. Dave (neighbor) had mentioned if I wanted to use his I could, so I went to get it. Dave and I were talking and he said he was trying to sell the engine hoist, if I knew anyone interested. I asked what he was looking at getting, he said how about $60, Farmer said he'll buy it ( meaning me) so I did. Now we have a hoist to do the work. We hauled it back to the house, hooked it up and presto the engine is out and in the back of the Toyota. We took it to George's, he plans to use it for a racing mustang. It's a 360 bored out to a 390, and I'm sure he will add a few extras. I am now removing all the little extra stuff such as the brake lines some wiring and basically getting it ready to clean up. I'll degrease it also, it's mighty greasy. Stripping it down will be (I'm sure) faster and easier than building it back. But I'm excited to do it. Anyway here are a couple of pictures, basically it's down to the frame and wheels.   By the way, Happy Birthday Kenneth William Slade (RIP)

Not much left, who'd even know the pick up?

Hauling' it away, until next time keep the faith,

10 August 2016 - Cab's gone

Well, today Farmer came over and we started in on the project. I had already been working on it earlier and yesterday. It seems I can hardly walk past the pick up without doing something to it. We are having a great time. I had already started removing the dash, instrument panel, heater, shifter, and released the clutch, brake and gas pedal. I also disconnected some of the wiring clusters. Now we need to remove the cab. 4 bolts, we just have to get to them. Farmer unbolted the cab, cut away the brake cable and we made sure everything was clear. Now we need some bodies to help lift it. Jeremy is in Yuma, that would have been 2 bodies. So we called Skip and the boys, Skip came with Michael, Chris was sleeping, and Daniel came. Sara also came to take pictures. She got a little carried away and took 58 pictures. I will not use them all of course. Anyway between the 5 of us we managed to get the cab off and set it aside. Next we wanted to move the pick up again so we had to roll it out, without steering because I removed the steering column and Farmer removed the wheel. I went and got the Toyota again and we hitched it up with a tow cable to maneuver it. It was a chore, but we got it in the garage, To Holly's dismay I'm sure. She's a good sport though. We needed it in the garage to have some concrete to set the engine hoist on to remove the engine. That's next, that and the tranny and front and rear differential. More on that on the next post. Happy birthday Tyleigh girl, anyway here're the pictures:

 Let's move it out
Michael did do quite a bit

Patty, as usual cleaning up after us.
I asked her to get something for me,
so she said I'll just take the broom

 Ok this is precision work

 Safe in the garage

By the way, all this metal (hopefully) will be a 20x40 metal garage and the new home of the project, any many more! In due time anyway. See you when the motor comes out,
